Many classes at Fanshawe College's London campus will switch over to online learning models when the winter semester begins in January.
The college announced several changes to the upcoming 2022 term Thursday afternoon. Students will have a slightly extended holiday break as classes for most programs will start several days later on January 10, 2022 instead of January 5. The semester's end date will stay the same with classes wrapping up on April 22, 2022.
When the new semester begins, the college said most programs in London will go ahead virtually.
"The health and safety of Fanshawe students, staff and the community remain our top priority. Based on public health recommendations to slow the spread of COVID-19, the college is changing some plans for the winter 2022 semester, including a shift to more online classes," read a statement from Fanshawe College officials.
Fully online programs will not be affected by the changes and blended programs will also shift to include more online modules. The college added that in-person teaching and labs will be available where needed.
The changes come as the number of new COVID-19 cases recorded across the province continues to surge. Meantime, the presence of the Omicron variant in the London-area also continues to see significant growth.
Fanshawe said it will provide additional updates as they hear more from the province in the coming days and weeks.
"Some of you may feel anxious or frustrated by the uncertainty of the COVID-19 situation continuing to evolve," the college stated. "We are working on answers for you. Fanshawe College leaders continue to work closely with the Ontario government and local public health officials to address concerns and develop strategies for student success."
Elsewhere, Western University announced some changes to its fall examination schedule. Starting Friday, all examinations will be held online. The university has not made any similar announcements regarding delivery changes to the 2022 winter term.
