Drivers who rely on King Street through Old East Village to get where they are going on a daily basis will have to alter their route for the next four months.
Beginning on Monday, King Street between Adelaide Street North and Lyle Street will be closed. The closure is to allow for work to begin on phase 1 of the bus rapid transit East London Link.
"Two-way traffic will be temporarily permitted on King Street between Adelaide Street North and Hewitt Street during this period to accommodate local traffic and visits to businesses in the area, which remain open," city officials said in a statement.
Drivers will be detoured to York Street, while cyclists are encouraged to use Dundas Street where they can connect to the Dundas Cycle Track, Dundas Place, and Dundas-TVP Connection. Municipal parking lot #4 will be accessible from Marshall Street.
Pedestrians will still be able to access the area.
The East London Link construction project will revitalize more than 6 km of road from the downtown to Fanshawe College, the city said. It will see the creation of dedicated public transit lanes and the repairing and replacing of aging sewers, watermains and other underground infrastructure.
Remaining phases of the project will be completed between 2023 and 2025.
