The Woodstock Police Service has named a new chief of police.
On Monday, the police services board announced Rod Wilkinson will be the force's new chief of police following the retirement of chief Daryl Longworth, who previously stated plans for his departure later this fall. Longworth's last working day will now be in July.
Wilkinson has served with Woodstock police for over 25 years, moving through various ranks in many diverse operational units. He also has technical and supervisory experience in Criminal Investigations, Court Services, Patrol, Incident Command and Tactical Operations. In 2020, Wilkinson was appointed deputy chief.
"The members of the board are looking forward to working with Rod, who we all hold in high regard after seeing him perform his duties as deputy chief," said board chair Ken Whiteford. "With a new strategic plan for the service on the horizon for 2023, we are confident that Rod is the person to lead us forward and bring new perspectives to this exercise which will have long term benefits for the service and the Woodstock community."
Serving as deputy chief for the last two years, Wilkinson has worked closely with Chief Longworth. Following his promotion, Wilkinson said he plans to look for new and innovative ways to allow officers to be more proactive.
"I would like to thank the board for entrusting me with the leadership of the Woodstock Police Service. We will continue to build on and maintain the trust of the Woodstock community," he said in a statement. "We will continue to work with our community partners and groups striving towards common goals."
Wilkinson's role as chief will take effect on July 9.
