Routine traffic stop leads to chase, slew of charges

A London man who allegedly tried to outrun police was arrested and charged with numerous offences after his vehicle broke down mid-chase.

The incident began when a Huron OPP officer spotted a vehicle missing its front licence plate in Clinton just before 10 p.m. on April 14. The officer tried to pull the vehicle over, but instead of stopping, the vehicle sped up.

According to police, the vehicle drove through a traffic signal, over a sidewalk and over a median before it broke down and the driver was arrested.

A search of the vehicle turned up methamphetamine, break-in tools, brass knuckles, stolen identification, and a pellet gun, police said. Further checks revealed the driver had failed to comply with numerous conditions of a probation order.

On Wednesday, charges were announced against a 35-year-old London man. He is charged with more than 20 offences including flight from a police officer, dangerous operation of a vehicle, driving while prohibited, possession of drugs, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.

The man remains in police custody and is scheduled to appear in court in relation to the charges on May 18.
