Smoke proved to be the biggest obstacle firefighters faced as they battled a fire inside a recycling facility in south London.
A driver passing by notified emergency crews about the blaze at 4695 Wellington Rd. South after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. Initially crews were told the fire was inside of a garage, before it was confirmed to be inside of a warehouse.
"Lots of recycling material was burning and the building was full of smoke. Our first arriving units had heavy smoke showing, coming from the eaves of the building on multiple sides," said London Fire Department Platoon Chief Gary Mosburger.
Due to the building's large size, additional firefighters were called to the scene.
"Ventilation was a challenge with the amount of smoke," said Mosburger. "It was enormous to move that much smoke out of the area with the fire still burning inside. We were there for about an hour and a half getting the fire under control and we did use foam application as well to assist us in that extinguishment."
No injuries were reported.
Mosburger added that there was no structural damage to the facility and an estimate on the smoke damage has not yet been determined.
