Body found in south London field

London police are investigating after a body was found in a field in the south-end of the city Friday morning.

A passerby called 911 after spotting what appeared to be a dead body in the open space in the area of Wellington Road and Commissioners Road East around 8:30 a.m.

Officers arrived on scene and located the deceased individual.

No information about the gender or age of the person has been released.

"The investigation is in its early stages and has been reassigned to members of the London Police Service major crime section," said Constable Sandasha Bough. "Investigators do not believe there is a risk to public safety at this time."

Several orange pylons could be seen marking off the area in the field beside Parkwood Hospital where the discovery was made. The body was removed by late-morning, with only two officers remaining at the scene early in the afternoon.

The public is asked to avoid the area while police continue to investigate.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 519-661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

This is the second time this week a dead body has been discovered in the city. On Wednesday afternoon, the body of a woman was pulled from the Thames River near Ivey Park. Police confirmed a day later the woman's death was not suspicious. Her name has not been released.
