Woodstock police are investigating after the driver of an SUV reportedly took off after a child was struck near the downtown area Wednesday evening.
According to officers, police were called to an area on James Street at around 6:40 p.m. for a report of a child that was hit by a red SUV on the road.
Police say the SUV, believed to be a Chevrolet Equinox, stopped up the road as the child got up and ran to their house. The vehicle then backed into a driveway for around 15 seconds before driving away.
The child suffered a minor injury described as "superficial" by police. They were taken to hospital to be assessed. The driver is described as a man in his 30s, with brown or blonde hair and he was the lone occupant of the vehicle.
"The Woodstock Police Service would like to remind drivers to drive slowly and cautiously through residential streets and other areas children may be playing," a release from Woodstock police read. "Police would also like to remind parents to have regular conversations to remind their children of road safety measures including walking across streets at designated corners and looking in all directions before entering the roadway."
Anyone with information is asked to contact Woodstock police at 519-537-2323.
