Western faculty reaches tentative agreement, strike averted

With just over an hour left until the strike deadline, the union representing Western University faculty announced a tentative agreement has been reached.

The University of Western Ontario Faculty Association (UWOFA), which represents librarians and archivists, has not provided any details about the deal, but confirmed on Twitter at around 10:30 p.m. Monday evening, that there will be no walkout on Tuesday.

"We are pleased to report that your support for UWOFA's negotiating team, along with strong strike preparedness, has paid off in allowing us to reach a tentative deal with the employer, and avert the need for strike action," a tweet from the faculty association read.

Western also released a statement confirming the news, adding that classes will proceed as scheduled Tuesday.

University faculty have been without a contract since the end of June. The union previously said its negotiations surround benefits for part-time members, job security for contract faculty, and pay equity for studio courses in the Faculty of Music.

UWOFA represents about 1,500 full- and part-time faculty members at Western.

Terms of the agreement won't be released publicly until both sides hold a ratification vote.
