With an ice storm set to hammer most of southwestern Ontario Wednesday afternoon, some school buses have been cancelled for the day in the London region.
Buses for Middlesex and Elgin counties and the Red Zone (the area south of Highway 401 inside London) won’t be on the roads Wednesday, according to MyBigYellowBus.ca. To see the full list of bus cancellations click here.
School vehicles in the City of London and Oxford County will be running on schedule.
The decision to cancel the buses for some regions came as a Colorado low is expected to move into the region, bringing prolonged freezing rain. Environment Canada has issued a freezing rain warning for most of southwestern Ontario including London-Middlesex, Oxford and Elgin. The national weather agency stated the system will lead to significant ice build-up in some areas with ice accretion of 10 to 20 millimetres possible. The freezing rain will begin late Wednesday afternoon and continue overnight before tapering off Thursday.
The London District Catholic and Thames Valley District school boards have confirmed all schools will be open on Wednesday, despite buses being cancelled in many areas.
