Wellington Road South reopened after lengthy police standoff

London police closed a stretch of Wellington Road in the city's south end early Tuesday due to a standoff at a south end hotel.

Police officials issued a statement to social media shortly before 6 p.m., advising the public to steer clear of Wellington Road between Bradley Avenue and Dearness Drive.

In an update at around 8 p.m., London police confirmed the heavy presence of officers at the Days Inn Hotel.

"Police are concerned for the welfare of a guest and are currently working toward a peaceful resolution," the update read. "There have been no injuries reported and there is no threat to the safety of the public at this time."

An earlier statement from police stated officers initially responded to the scene shortly after 4 p.m.

"We are asking both pedestrians and motorists to avoid the area. There is a heavy police presence in the area of Wellington Rd. and Dearness Dr. as a result of an investigation that began at approximately 4:20 p.m. today," read a statement from Media Officer Constable Brittany Campbell to LondonNewsToday.ca.

Wellington was reopened early Wednesday morning.

Police said the hotel guest, an adult male, was apprehended and taken to hospital. No injuries have been reported at this time.
