Downtown security officer nearly injured by man wielding hatchet

A downtown London security guard managed to evade injury after an agitated man allegedly tried to strike them with a hatchet.

London police say the incident happened at around 4 p.m. Tuesday when the security officer stopped to help a man while patrolling the area of Dundas and Richmond streets.

During the interaction, the man reportedly pulled a hatchet from his belt and grabbed the security officer in an attempt to strike him with it. The officer was not hurt during the incident and the accused took off from the area.

A citizen who witnessed the incident called Community Foot Patrol officers and gave them a description of the accused. He was arrested nearby without further incident.

As a result, a 51-year-old man from London has been charged with assault with a weapon and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.

He was scheduled for a court appearance on Wednesday.
