Following heavy rain that cleared out of the London region early Thursday, there are concerns about potential flooding.
The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) said the ground, which is already saturated from previous rainfall, is unlikely to absorb much of the rain that fell Wednesday night into Thursday. That means localized flooding, particularly in low-lying areas, could be an issue, the conservation authority warned.
Parents are being reminded to keep kids away from waterways as a precaution.
"Banks adjacent to rivers, creeks, and ditches may be slippery and, when combined with fast-moving water, pose a serious hazard," the conservation authority said in a statement. "It is not safe to take shelter along riverbanks or in low lying areas that are prone to flooding."
Flood control reservoirs at Fanshawe, Wildwood, and Pittock conservation areas will be operated to reduce downstream flooding, the conservation authority added.
The latest downpour prompted Environment Canada to issue a rainfall warning for much of southwestern Ontario. Between 30 to 50 mm and isolated amounts of up to 75 mm was possible as the system moved across the area before tapering off Thursday morning. Additional rain is possible Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
