Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is now looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 35-year-old man in London.
Police officers swarmed a southeast London neighbourhood Friday morning looking for a man described as "armed and dangerous."
A person had called 911 around 8:40 a.m. to report that they had seen a man with a gun on Glenroy Road, just east of Pond Mills Road.
Officers in full tactical gear were seen searching the area, even using a drone at one point to look for the suspect. During the manhunt, the residential street was closed and several homes evacuated as a safety precaution.
Acting Sgt. Sandasha Bough said officers were provided a location where "a person who is armed and dangerous" was potentially located.
The search ended around 11:30 a.m. According to police, while on scene officers were notified that a person had been transported to hospital by paramedic services due to a gunshot wound believed to have been caused by the suspect.
The police located the suspect who remained in possession of a gun.
Police Chief Thai Truong issued a statement about the incident late Friday, commending officers' response. He also provided several new details about the investigation.
"Our officers responded to multiple emergency calls for assistance following an attempted carjacking by a suspect," read a tweet posted by Truong. "We believe the same individual is also responsible for discharging a firearm at a member of the public."
As of Friday afternoon, the SIU reported that during an interaction between the police and the suspect, an officer fired a gun and a man was struck. The man was later pronounced dead in hospital.
"There is no risk to public safety. This remains an active and ongoing investigation," Bough added.
Residents have since been allowed to return to their homes and the street reopened.
Four SIU investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police regarding incidents that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
