Maggie Mac Neil wins Canada's first medal at the World Aquatics Championships

London-native Maggie Mac Neil has more hardware to add to her collection after capturing Canada's first medal at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.

The three-time Olympic medallist came in second in the 100-metre butterfly on Monday to claim the silver medal.

She finished the race with a time of 56.45 seconds, just point 33 seconds after China's Zhang Yufei who took gold.

Bronze went to American Torri Huske who has a time of 56.61 seconds.

This is Mac Neil's first time back competing in singles events at the world championships after opting to only compete in relays due to mental health reasons in 2022.

Mac Neil has three medals - gold, silver and bronze - from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which were held in July 2021. The Association of National Olympic Committees named her the best female athlete at the games. She also went on to set a new world record in the women's 50-metre backstroke at the FINA World Swimming Championships in December of that year with a time of 25.27 seconds.
