UPDATE: Driver charged in crash that severed gas line, closed Old South road

Charges have been laid in a crash that ruptured a gas line and closed part of a main artery in Old South for nearly 20 hours.

Emergency crews were called to a two-vehicle crash on Wharncliffe Road South at Byron Avenue around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The force of the collision caused one of the vehicles to slam into a home near the intersection, severing a gas line, London police said.

One person was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Homes and businesses in the area were temporarily evacuated as a precaution. Enbridge Gas was called in to shut off the gas and repair the damaged line. Hydro to the area was also cut for a short time.

Due to the damage to the home, crews were unable to immediately remove the vehicle from the scene. It remained in place, guarded by police overnight.

Friday morning, London Fire Platoon Chief Colin Shewell confirmed that a structural engineer was on scene to ensure the building remained stable as the vehicle was removed. Wharncliffe between Byron and Euclid avenues continued to be closed during that process. Shewell expected the road to be reopened by 2 p.m.

The driver of one of the vehicles has been charged with failing to stop at a red light, police said.
