Store employee punched trying to stop shoplifter

A 41-year-old man is facing charges after an employee at a St. Thomas store was assaulted while trying to stop a suspected shoplifter.

St. Thomas police were called to the unnamed retail store on Talbot Street on Tuesday.

An investigation determined that an employee had attempted to stop a person believed to have items they did not pay for and was subsequently punched in the face.

Injuries were minor and the stolen items were recovered, police said.

A suspect in the assault was arrested a short distance from the store.

A St. Thomas resident has been charged with assault and theft under $5,000.
