Woman broke own foot trying to escape from London police: SIU

The province's police watchdog has determined a woman who fractured her foot while trying to escape from London police injured herself.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) announced on Wednesday it has terminated its investigation into the July 24 incident. It was during the early hours on that date, London police had gone to a second floor apartment on Dundas Street near Adelaide Street on an outstanding warrant for a man.

A woman answered the door and told officers the man was the previous tenant and no longer lived there. After leaving, police did a records check that showed the woman in the apartment also had an outstanding warrant for her arrest. Police returned to the building where the woman closed the door on officers once she was informed they were there to arrest her.

According to the SIU, the woman attempted to get away by sliding down a pipe on the exterior of the building that was near her second floor balcony.

In doing so, the woman reportedly hit the ground hard and fractured her right foot and ankle. She was arrested and taken to hospital for treatment.

The SIU was then notified due to her serious injury.

"Aside from knocking on the door and advising the woman of her arrest, the officers did nothing to cause or contribute to her misadventure," SIU Director Director Martino said in a statement. "Accordingly, as there was patently nothing to investigate as far as the potential criminal liability of any police officer was concerned, the file has been closed."

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
