St. Thomas police officer cleared by SIU

A St. Thomas police officer has been cleared by Ontario's police watchdog after an investigation into an incident last fall.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was looking into an arrest made in September 2023 that resulted in serious injury to a 51-year-old suspect.

According to a release, a man was arrested on Forest Avenue after driving a vehicle while his licence was suspended.

"The man threatened both officers with violence if they laid hands on him. He also pushed each officer in the chest and resisted while he was being forced to the ground. The officers delivered several knee strikes and punches during the struggle," the release said.

The man's nose was broken and he was taken to hospital.

The SIU found that the injury was caused during the arrest, but that the police officer's conduct was not unlawful.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault, or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
