Police are investigating after a St. Thomas resident was scammed out of thousands of dollars.
The person received a call on Friday from someone claiming to be from Amazon who informed them their account had been compromised. The caller told the resident the RCMP would be investigating the fraud.
The resident soon got another call, this time from a person claiming to be from the RCMP and after a series of conversations and transactions $15,000 was removed from their account.
At this point, St. Thomas police were contacted. The police service's criminal investigation branch is continuing to investigate.
Police are urging anyone who believes they may be the victim of fraud or who is looking to learn ways to protect themselves from such scams to visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website.
