One person killed in northeast London house fire

One person is dead and another in hospital after fire broke out inside of a home in northeast London.

Multiple fire crews were called to the duplex at 1600 Nairn Ave., near Pickwick Crescent around 8:40 a.m. on Tuesday. When firefighters arrived they were met with heavy black smoke coming from an upper front window of the home.

A person outside told firefighters another individual was still inside the burning structure.

"Our crews did a quick, efficient primary search and were able to find the individual quite quickly," said London Fire Department Platoon Chief Colin Shewell. "Unfortunately, we determined they were deceased at that time."

A second person was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital with injuries described as non-life threatening.

"Obviously, it is a traumatic day for the family and friends of the deceased, and even our first responders," said Shewell. "We extend our deepest condolences and thoughts to the family. It is unfortunate that this has happened to them."

Damage to the home is estimated at $450,000.

"The damage is fairly extensive to the main floor. Our fire investigators, along with London police, will do a methodical investigation over the next few days and be able to hopefully come up with a cause of the fire," Shewell added.

The Ontario Fire Marshal has been notified and is expected to arrive on scene in the afternoon.

Police are asking anyone with information about the blaze to call them at 519-661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
