Man and dog killed in separate fires in London

A man and a dog died in two separate fires in London that caused a combined $1-million in damage.

Fire crews were called to the first blaze at a two-storey home at 275 William St., north of Horton Street shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday. Thick smoke could be seen coming from the upper level of the home.

Firefighters rescued one dog, but found another dead inside the burning house.

No one was injured, fire officials said.

Four residents of the home have been displaced and damage is estimated at $800,000.

Roughly three hours later and just four blocks away, another fire broke out, this time at the Tolpuddle Housing Co-op at 654 King St. The fire was contained to a single unit in the building

Firefighters found a man inside that burning unit. He was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. He died from his injuries on Friday morning, London police have confirmed.

Damage is pegged at $200,000.

Fire officials have not released a suspected cause of either fire.

Police have said the investigation into the King Street fire is in its early stages and updates will be provided as appropriate.

It is the city's second fatal fire this week. On Tuesday, one person was killed and another seriously hurt when a duplex at 1600 Nairn Ave., near Pickwick Crescent caught fire. The injured person was taken to hospital where they remained on Thursday afternoon.
