Bluewater School Board Chair Supports Proposed School Accommodation Changes

The Education Ministry has tabled proposals for changes to the accommodation review process when schools are considered for closure due to declining enrolment.

The proposals include shortening the process from seven months and four public meeting to five months and two public meeting.

Bluewater District School Board chair Ron Motz says two public meetings would be sufficient.

"Two public meetings make sense certainly from the school board's point of view and also from the community point of view…I think the four meetings just drag things on too far."

Another of the proposed changes would eliminate the necessity for the Accommodation Review Committee to make specific recommendations on whether a school should close. Instead the committee would provide a summary of feedback from the community and outline options.

The proposals are now before school boards for their consideration and comments.
