Wellington North Development Refunds Issue Returns

Wellington North council has denied a request by local resident Jens Dam  for a judicial inquiry into the handling of refunds of development charges to local developers.

Dam has been a thorn in the side of council in recent years winning two OMB challenges against council’s actions.

As well as denying the request for a judicial review, council also unanimously endorsed the past actions of council regarding development charges.

Mayor Andy Lennox says he hopes that puts an end to the contentious issue involving about $280,000.

But Dam says he won’t give up until the public gets a full explanation of who authorized the refunds which he calls a “misappropriation” of municipal funds.

Dam says: “Until we’ve got a clear answer who was responsible, I think the case cannot be closed.”

Lennox says: A judicial review “would just incur more costs. We know mistakes were made. It’s time to move on.”
