The Huron Hospice Palliative Care Steering Committee has asked Huron County council for $3,000.
Co-chair Kathy O'Reilly explains that Huron County has the second-oldest population in the Southwest LHIN behind Grey County, but has no specifically funded or dedicated palliative care beds.
O'Reilly adds the funding would be used for public consultation to determine and publicize what is currently available in Huron County as well as what is needed.
"We want to go out and talk to people at a very grassroots level," O'Reilly told CKNX News, "To the residents of Huron County and other stakeholders about what they believe could be a strength within the county and what they believe are the gaps."
O'Reilly does point out that Huron does provide excellent palliative care through a number of community services and health care providers.
She goes on to say that palliative care begins with the diagnosis and goes far beyond the physical treatment and relief of pain but includes psychological support for the patients as well as family members.
Huron County council has asked staff to prepare a report to bring back to council.
