The Sloman School on Wheels Museum is hosting a "Thomas Day" on Saturday.
Curator Carolyn Brophy explains Thomas the Tank Engine is a popular cartoon and toy with young children and they'll have a scaled down model of Thomas at the Sloman Park.
The Sloman Rail Car starting bringing education to remote northern communities in 1926.
There were no roads at that time, but there were train tracks and thus the Sloman School was born.
"Just before 1926, education was compulsory for children up to age 14," Brophy tells CKNX News. "So the superintendent of education had to find a way to bring education to remote northern communities."
Brophy says the Sloman School would stop at each location for a week and leave enough homework for a month before moving on to the next location, and that was considered a much better option than going to residential schools. The last Solman School car ran in 1967.
The Thomas the Tank Engine Day is this Saturday at Sloman Park at the south end of Clinton off Hwy. 4.
The Thomas model will be on display from 10am to 2pm.
