Volunteers Needed In Goderich For Beach And River Bank Cleanup

The Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation is looking for volunteers Saturday to help clean up the Lake Huron shoreline and the banks of the Maitland River.

Coastal Resources Manager Geoff Peach explains the clean up of the shoreline is part of a national Shoreline Cleanup program that runs every fall.

Peach says cigarette butts are the most common problem along the beaches, but they also find large quantities of plastic, in the form of bottles and other products.

Another big problem along the shoreline or river banks is plastic fishing line that's been left behind. That can create a serious hazard for birds or animals that can become trapped in it.

Volunteers are asked to meet at 10am Saturday morning at either the main beach in Goderich or at the Menesetung Bridge for a cleanup of the Maitland River banks, hosted by the Lower Maitland Stewardship Group.
