Sauble Dunes Prevent Flooding Of Lakeshore Blvd

The Dune management director with the Friends of Sauble Beach organization says the iconic and sometimes controversial sand dunes are the only thing stopping flooding on Lakeshore Blvd. N.

John Strachan says with water levels reaching historic highs, strong west winds have pushed the waves right to the foot of the dunes.

He says he hasn't seen the water being pushed that far inland for years.

The group has been working to preserve the dunes, and their unique vegetation.

He adds the dunes not only offer flood control, they prevent sand from blowing onto residents lawns, and store sand to replenish the beach.

Water levels were at a record low in January 2013, but the level is up by about 30 cm from last year.

“It's because of the town's sound management practices over the years that we now have an adequate flood control infrastructure to protect our roads and our residents' properties,” says Strachan. “I think we're ready for the winds of November.”
