Goderich Warning Siren Discussion Continues

Goderich is still waiting for some form of warning system in the event of an impending emergency.

There had been talk of a siren following the tornado, but Goderich CAO Larry McCabe says there are some problems with a siren.

Primarily people would have to know that a siren would mean to take cover.

In some parts of the U.S. where hurricanes are frequent, the most common response to the siren was that people came outside to see what the noise was all about.

So, McCabe says there would have to be some education. He adds someone would have to on duty constantly to be able to make the decision to use the siren.

McCabe says the CRTC is currently looking at other alternatives like using cell phones or television to alert people to a possible emergency.

He says whatever the CRTC comes up with would be used throughout Canada and that would make it more universally recognized and more effective.
