Owen Sound Kicks Off Fire Prevention Week With A Warning

The City of Owen Sound is kicking off fire prevention week today by asking residents to "hear the beep where you sleep".

Fire Chief Doug Barfoot says many fatal fires occur at night when everyone is sleeping.

He says early warning is critical to survival. So the Ontario Fire Code requires working smoke detectors on every storey of a home, and outside of all sleeping areas.

The Owen Sound Fire Department suggests you also install a smoke alarm in every bedroom for extra protection.

The best protection comes from inter connected smoke alarms, which trigger all the alarms throughout the home when one alarm senses smoke.

Wireless interconnected smoke alarms are now available to make installation easy.

You should also replace your smoke alarm about every ten years.
