The Grey Bruce Health Unit is marking World Food Day with a call for action to reduce the number of people who face food insecurity.
One in eight Canadian households do not have the resources to provide for enough healthy food. And good food is beyond the reach of many families in Grey and Bruce.
For example, a single person supported by Ontario Works, makes $740 a month, while the average rent in the region is $579.
It costs an average of $290 a month to buy healthy food locally, so there isn't enough money for both rent and sufficient food.
A family of four receives $2,196 from Ontario Works, pays $905 a month average rent, and would need $864 to buy healthy food. That leaves just $427 for all other expenses like utilities, transportation, prescription drugs, personal care and clothing.
Locally, the Bruce Botanical Food Gardens in Ripley is a small piece of the solution.
