Bayfield's Blue Community Designation Recognized

A Bayfield resident was a finalist in Earth Day's Hometown Heroes contest.

But Ray Letheran is quick to suggest the award was given to Bayfield's Environmental Community, and his name went on the plaque only because he's the longest -serving member of the group at twenty years.

What Letheran does acknowledge is the award recognizes the Environmental Community for the success they've had in improving water quality in Lake Huron and the Bayfield River.

One of the Environmental Community's targets has been bottled water and they have been successful in converting Bayfield into a Blue Community.    That's a designation given by the Council of Canada to communities that recognizes water as a human right and encourages the use of municipal water.

As a result, 39 community groups in Bayfield no longer use bottled water.

Letheran has been invited to speak at the Council of Canadians annual general meeting in Windsor about how Bayfield became a Blue Community.
