Proposed Meaford K-to-12 School Gets Support

A member of the Meaford School Community Group believes the benefits of attending a school for all grades from Kindergarten to Grade 12 outweigh any problems.

Shannonlee Wilkie told CKNX News she fully agrees with the accommodation review being conducted for the Bluewater District School Board.

One of the recommendations calls for the closing of Meaford Community School at the end of the 2015-16 academic year because of declining enrolment.

The Grade 4 to Grade 8 students from Meaford Community School would be transferred to Georgian Bay Secondary School.

Children in Kindergarten to Grade 3 and children in the local French Immersion program would continue to attend St. Vincent-Euphrasia School, at least for the next few years.

Another recommendation calls for building a new school in Meaford over the next five to 10 years. Such a school would accommodate all students from Kindergarten to Grade 12.

Wilkie says she realizes that some parents are nervous about having children of all ages attending a K-12 school. But she adds, "I have spoken with people who have visited these schools and even some whose children attend them, and they are pleased with the results."
