Deficit Grows For Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance

The CEO of the Huron-Perth Healthcare Alliance says they're doing everything they can to find new efficiencies but despite their best efforts the deficit continues to be a concern.

They are currently looking at a deficit for the current fiscal year of about $1-million on a total budget of $123-million.

Andrew Williams says the problem isn't unique to the alliance hospitals as most hospitals in Ontario have faced zero per cent funding increases for the last four years.

Williams also points out the funding formula is driven by population growth and efficiency, so hospitals in areas where the population is not growing are struggling.

Williams adds all department heads are looking for ways to reduce costs and find new ways of delivering service, but the longer hospitals go with no increase in funding, the more challenging it becomes.
