Pedelec Users Want Access To Meaford Trail

People who use a bicycle equipped with a small electric motor would like to be allowed to ride along Meaford’s section of the Georgian Trail.

Staff in Meaford have been asked to prepare a report on how the Georgian Trail is governed, and who decides what vehicles should be allowed on the trail.

When the 32 km Georgian Trail opened in 1990, its board of management ruled that only hikers, bicyclists, and cross-country skiers could use the trail.  ATVs, snowmobiles and other gasoline-powered vehicles were banned.

In August, Collingwood council voted to allow the use of the electric-powered pedelec bikes on it's section of the Georgian Trail.

Meaford Councillor Jaden Calvert says many local residents would like to ride their electric bikes on the trail if the rules would allow it. The electric motor provides the rider with extra power when it's needed.
