Minto Council: Sidewalks And Cyclists Don't Mix

Minto Council is opening a discussion on whether to bring in a bylaw to ban bikes on downtown sidewalks.

Minto CAO Bill White says now that Harriston’s main street has been rebuilt, local cyclists are taking advantage of the new sidewalks.  But councillors have been told that there have been several near-collisions between bikes and pedestrians.

At the moment, it is not illegal to ride a bike on the sidewalk, however it is illegal to park a bike on a sidewalk.

Minto Deputy Mayor Ron Faulkner, a former OPP Inspector, says education is the way to control bicycles on sidewalks.

Minto council is planning to discuss the matter with the Minto Downtown Advisory Committee.
