Ontario's police watchdog has found that three Hanover police officers are not criminally liable for their actions after a 40-year-old man was injured during an arrest back in April.
The Special Investigations Unit says on April 14, 2015, officers attended 253 Tenth St. to find a man throwing furniture through the broken second floor windows of his apartment. The man also allegedly announced to officers that he had a rifle and explosives, before setting two fires inside the apartment.
Officers evacuated the surrounding apartments and sprayed pepper spray under the man’s door. Police then entered the apartment and Tasered the suspect before placing him under arrest. Two officers remained at the apartment to extinguish the fire.
The 40-year-old suspect was taken to hospital where he was found to have a fractured wrist
“The officers displayed true professionalism in a volatile situation," says SIU Director Tony Loparco in a media release. "There are no reasonable grounds to believe that any criminal offence was committed by any officer in this case and no charges shall be laid.”
The SIU conducts criminal investigations into circumstances involving police officers that have resulted in serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault.
