The Saugeen Shores refugee fund got a big boost when a Port Elgin couple purchased a home for a Syrian refugee family.
Organizer Katherine Martinko writes that local residents Miriam and Samir will rent the four bedroom home in Port Elgin to the 13 member refugee family when they arrive.
The family is currently undergoing security screening with Canadian Visa officers at a refugee camp near Beirut.
Saugeen Shores refugee fund has so far raised over $54,000 through the Mennonite Central committee and the federal government will kick in between 40% to 50% of the costs as well.
Martinko says they hope to bring a second family later in 2016, at which point we’ll do this all over again.
