Little Opposition To Meaford School Changes

Bluewater District School Board trustee Linda Hamill was not surprised that the board cancelled it’s special meeting Tuesday night.

The meeting in Chesley was called to hear presentations from delegations about plans to close Meaford Community School in September.

Meaford Community School students from Grades 4 to 8 would go to Georgian Bay Secondary School, while M.C.S. students from Kindergarten to Grade 3 would go to St. Vincent-Euphrasia elementary school. S.V.E. students from Grades 4 and 5 would also go to Georgian Bay Secondary School.

The goal of the plan is to reduce the 720 surplus student spaces in Meaford schools to 306. This in turn would save the board almost $300,000 in net operating losses.

Hamill said that members of both the high school parents group and the community schools parents group already indicated they accept the plan.  The Municipality of Meaford also supported the plan.

The meeting was cancelled after the Municipality of Meaford withdrew their delegation request.

However, they did send the board their presentation to post on their  website.

Hamill said the next step will be for staff to present a final report to Bluewater board trustees at their March 1 meeting.

Trustees will then consider approving it later in March.
