Stratford Man Defrauded Of $11K

A Stratford man is out $11,000 after being tricked into believing he owed back taxes.

Stratford police say the 45-year-old man was called yesterday by someone claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency. The caller told the man he owed back taxes in excess of $10,000. The caller then told the man he would be arrested if the money was not paid immediately.

The man wired money to the scammers and after he did so he became suspicious and contacted police. Stratford police were able to determine it was a scam but the money transfer couldn't be cancelled.

Police want everyone to know the Canada Revenue Agency does not operate in this manner. If you get a call from someone claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency you should hang up and call police.
