Two Goderich-area residents approached Huron County council yesterday with a request for moral and financial support for their effort to bring Dutch royalty to Goderich in 2017.
Sid Bruinsma explained he and author Jim Rutledge had been to Holland several times in the last few years on behalf of Canadian veterans and the relationship between Canadian and Dutch people is something very unique.
They're calling their project Dutch-Canadians Remember as One and in conjunction with Canada's 150th anniversary celebrations they want to invite Dutch Princess Margriet to Goderich in the summer of 2017. Bruinsma adds they need the support of both the Federal and Provincial governments as well as the county so they're asking the county for a letter of support as well as a grant of about seven-thousand dollars. Council has asked for a staff report.
Bruinsma adds the Dutch Royal Family staff are still finalizing plans for this year so they'll to submit their official request sometime in September of this year.
