Ontario's premier says the most recent delay in the decision on Ontario Power Generation's proposed Deep Geologic Repository (DGR) in Bruce County is to make sure they get it right.
On Thursday, the federal government's minister of environment and climate change, Catherine McKenna, requested more information and studies to be carried out.
Premier Kathleen Wynne says change happens if it's necessary. She adds they want to make sure that the science is in place and that they get it right.
"I've heard concerns, I've obviously heard people who want to see this go ahead but I've also heard people who are very concerned that the science hasn't been completely landed and so I think they need to take the time necessary to ensure safety to the environment and to the communities," says Wynne.
OPG has until April 18, 2016 to provide the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency with a schedule for completing the information and studies request.
Wynne says as far as changing the timeline on the project, she's never disappointed when there's a rationale for changing a timeline.
"If there's a determination that there needs to be a further study or there needs to be some time taken to get it right, then you can't undo these things, you know, you can't undo damage and so doing the work up front is absolutely necessary," adds Wynne.
Minister McKenna is expected to seek an additional timeline extension from the Governor in Council at a later date.
