Perth Wellington's MPP Hopes Premier Reviews Senior Low Income Threshold

Perth Wellington's MPP wants Premier Kathleen Wynne to do a study before determining the low income threshold for seniors.

The premier promised yesterday to take another look at the issue, after many disagreed that a senior making over $19,000 a year is a well-off citizen.

Randy Pettapiece says seniors over that threshold will have to pay a $170 deductible for medication, an increase of 70%.

The PC Critic for seniors says the government failed to listen to seniors or experts before writing the budget.

He says seniors will find it more difficult to make ends meet as they face higher costs for drugs and fuel.

Randy Pettapiece says the province not only increased the deductible and co payment for the seniors drug program, it hiked the cost of gasoline and natural gas.

Pettapiece welcomes palliative care provisions in the budget, but says the increasing waiting list for long term care beds was not addressed.

But he says he understands that there is now money because out of control spending has created a ballooning debt that drains a billion dollars a month in interest payments.
