'Avoid Germs That Make You Squirm'

The Grey Bruce Health Unit has started a campaign to reduce digestive system or enteric illnesses.

They're calling it 'Avoid Germs that Make You Squirm".

Health Unit Public Health Inspector Jennifer Van Dyk says Grey Bruce has the highest rate of salmonella in Ontario, and this campaign is meant to reduce that.

"Hopefully people will see the banners, see the message and take home some tips to avoid those germs," says Van Dyk.   She adds enteric illnesses can be more than an inconvenience. "They can be serious, they can lead to other illnesses and more serious complications so what we always say is if you are feeling ill if you're down and out go see a physician and get tested."

Van Dyk says enteric illness is often spread by farm animals as well as careless food handling, so wash your hands often and practice general food safety.

The campaign will get the message out through social media and displays at events like Roots of Bruce and Grown in Grey.
