Forecasted Rainfall Prompts Flood Watches

Updated 4:35am on Monday, March 28:

A rainfall warning is still in effect for Huron, Perth, Wellington, Bruce and Grey.

We can expect between 25 and 50 mm of rain by the time the system rolls out of the region later today. Since Sunday night, at last 15 mm of rain has fallen in the area.

The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority's flood watch is still in effect and the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority watershed conditions statement states additional rainfall will likely result in quick runoff and heightened water levels.

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for most of southern Ontario, which has local conservation authorities worried about potential flooding.

The warning is in effect for Bruce, Grey, Huron, Perth and Wellington counties.

Rain is expected to start Sunday evening, with the region receiving up to 50 mm (2 in) of precipitation. The heavy rain is expected to let up Monday afternoon.

The predicted precipitation has prompted the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) to issue a flood watch for area. With the ground already saturated from the rain last Friday and water levels still higher than normal, the ABCA says there is a greater risk of flooding.

The Maitland Valley Conservation Authority also issued a watershed conditions statement saying any additional rainfall will likely result in quick runoff and heightened water levels.

Local residents are reminded to avoid all watercourses. The conservation authorities say extremely cold water combined with slippery and unstable banks, will create hazardous conditions.
