Huron County Museum Pays Tribute to Early Immigrants

The Huron County Museum's Education and Programming Assistant says a request for photographs for one of early immigrants to the county did not yield that specific picture.

But Sinead Cox was very pleased with what they did receive.   She says it's a real tribute to the families that did migrate to Huron County that their roots are so deep, and they have several family members who had access to a wealth of family treasures.

The exhibit honouring seven of those families is now open and runs until October 15th.

Cox points out each story is unique in its own way, but some trends emerged as they were putting the exhibit together.   One was the importance of having family members or friends working with them and sharing in the work and the rewards.   Cox says that was a common theme throughout, whether they had family here and arrived in Huron County as a family.

Cox adds that reliance on family also applies to the Dutch population that arrived here after the Second World War, and continues to apply to the newcomers to the county today, and without the support of the people already living here, success would be very difficult.

Cox explains that in focusing on seven specific families they left a lot of stories untold, so they're hoping visitors to the exhibit will share some of their family stories about coming to Huron County.
