Goderich May Tow Vehicles Parked Illegally At The North Pier

Handing out parking tickets for vehicles that are illegally parked in restricted areas along the North Pier has not been as effective as the town of Goderich had hoped.

CAO Larry McCabe explains some parking areas are restricted to leave room for the anglers and other visitors. But he says vehicles they believe belong primarily to employees at the salt mine continue to be parked there.

In 2015,  the tickets were $35 each and the town collected almost $12,000 in fines.

The fine was increased to $45 this year, but the town has still issued close to $9,000 in tickets.

Goderich staff have been asked to look into the possibility of towing vehicles.  A report will be brought back to the next council meeting.

The salt mine provides employee parking at an off-site lot and a shuttle service to the mine, but neither that service or the parking tickets have solved the problem.
