Avon Maitland School Board Studying iPad Impact

The director of education for the Avon Maitland District School Board says technology is not the answer for all student achievement challenges.

But Ted Doherty says the results of their program that involves giving students at the Grade 7 level their own iPad has paid dividends so far.

Doherty was responding to an newspaper opinion piece that was critical of giving iPads to students.

Doherty explains while they're using the technology they're also working with a group from Western University to look into the impact of technology on students and the early results have been favourable.

Doherty adds the program has been in place for three years now so students in grades seven, eight and nine now have their own iPads and he says if problems develop they'll make appropriate changes to the program.

Doherty says they're tracking thinks like engagement and literacy and numeracy and while it's still very early so far the results suggest the technology is having a positive impact on the students.
