The mayor of Huron East says council has to do some serious thinking regarding the use of its recreational facilities in Vanastra, Seaforth and Brussels.
But Bernie MacLellan quickly points out that doesn't mean they're ready to close any of them. He refers to a suggestion by one councillor that they consider re-purposing one from an arena to an indoor soccer area, and explains that was just a comment and not a discussion of council.
He adds when the municipality is having to come up with $600,000 to cover costs that are not being met by gate receipts, something has to change. MacLellan says recreational facilities now represent the second-largest expense to the municipality.
MacLellan also says no one wants to see an arena close, but like many municipalities, Huron East does have to look for ways to off-set the cost of keeping their arenas open.
