A group trying to save Owen Sound Collegiate and Vocational Institute has filed an appeal of the planned school closure to the Ministry of Education
The group collected hundreds of signatures from students, parents, and residents after learning the Bluewater District School Board wants to convert the OSCVI building into an elementary school.
West Hill Secondary will house all of the board's secondary students from the Owen Sound area.
The students had a month to appeal the decision, and submitted it to the province before yesterday's deadline.
The petitions ask for a one year delay so the community and students have time to adjust, and stakeholder groups can be consulted on the plan.
The Save OSCVI says provincial guidelines suggest the process to close a school should take 24 - 30 months. OSCVI will close less than 50 days after the board released the decision.
The board will close Derby Public in June.
Sydenham Community, Bayview Elementary, and Dufferin Elementary will close in June 2017.
