No Accommodation Reviews For Avon Maitland District School Board

The Avon Maitland District School Board will not pursue any accommodation reviews next school year but will have to keep an eye on enrollment.

Every year an accommodation review report is presented to trustees.

"Our overall enrollment in elementary is starting to level off. We're seeing a slight decrease every year and we do have a number of schools that are at 60% capacity or under that," says Director of Education Ted Doherty. "The biggest decline continues to work it's way through secondary. We're seeing a 4% decline in our secondary schools every year and that's hopefully going to level off in the next couple of years."

But with that being said, Doherty says there is no recommendation for and accommodation review.

"We haven't identified any areas which we would recommend for a secondary review. We have not investigated in any great extent evaluating secondary schools for any possible consolidation," he says.

The majority of a school board's funding is based on enrollment.

If a school has low enrollment it can lead to more split classes, less programming and fewer staff to support students.
